Iron steaming with water isn't usually needed for felt fabrics. Washing your felt fabric or items by hand in a tub of water or sink is another option. Make sure the water isn't too hot to avoid any shrinking, and use a tiny amount of gentle detergent no bleach or anything harsh. Also, never wring felt out because it can warp the material.

One major difference between blended wool felt and craft felt is that wool is used in making the felt. The wool felt is available online and in major chain stores that carry fabric. I sprayed the felt with water, put it on top of a wet cotton cloth and rolled it up like a swiss roll , then I popped it in the microwave.

It worked wonders!! After a couple of minutes I took it out and it was just perfect. The water had turned into vapor and sunken into the felt. If you aren't familiar with the concept, felt sticks to felt.

There are characters made out of felt, then glued to a felt background, and there are tons of fabric accessories that you can stick to them to make your own crazy characters. When you clean your felt, it's a good time to clean the balls too. For the balls, warm water with a little bit of detergent works well.

Wet a towel, wring it out, clean each ball and set aside to air dry while you tend to the cloth. There are some commercial cleaners labeled for table top cleaning. You want the water to just cover the felt. Well, the original purpose for using roofing felt was to be a temporary waterproof roof whilst homeowners would have to build their own roofs. When homeowners would remove the shingles off their roof on a weekend, the roofing felt would serve as a waterproof cover.

Colors may bleed. If you use detergent, make sure it is very gentle. Wash the felt item on the delicate cycle. Though most felt items should not be washed, if you have an item you want to machine wash, you should wash it on the delicate cycle. Use a gentle detergent, like Woolite. Only do this occasionally. Remove excess water. You can remove excess water from the felt by pressing it between two towels. Flatten the felt as much as possible to its original shape. Air dry the item.

Instead, you should air dry them. This may be on a clothing line or on a hanger in your home. Just make sure you place it in a cool area and not in the direct sun. Method 3. Determine if your felt is wool felt or synthetic felt. Wool felt reacts more negatively to washing than synthetic felt. Wool felt may shrink, bleed, or start to fuzz.

Synthetic felt typically can be washed without too many problems. If you have wool felt, take more care washing it. If you have synthetic felt, it will probably be more durable. We use soap and gently squeeze the felt into a ball, rinsing and repeating until the water runs clear.

This process does two things to the felt. First the hot water gets any excess dye out. Not all colors bleed -but this bright Carmine did! Second, the combination of hot water, soap and gentle squeezing is further felting the fabric -binding the fibers even closer together and causing the felt to shrink.
