It felt like the whole world had changed in an instant. Mrs Nicholls said she had later confronted her father over the phone about the affair. On claims the relationship between her friend and father had been going on since the friend was 13, Mrs Nicholls insisted: "No, she never said that.
Under-cross examination by prosecutor Sasha Wass QC, Mrs Nicholls, an artist, denied she and her father had colluded over their evidence. She also disputed evidence given during the prosecution case by her ex-partner Malcolm Cox. He had told the court the allegations from Mrs Nicholls's friend had been raised in a conversation between the three of them around But Mrs Nicholls said her relationship with Mr Cox became "very bad" after they split and denied any conversation of this nature had taken place.
In answer to a question about whether she was "financially dependent" on her father, Mrs Nicholls said she had earnings from selling her paintings and renting out a property, and her husband worked as a teacher. But she acknowledged the amount paled by comparison to money her father provided as a "monthly income". She may not have been subjected to the vile attentions he forced upon a string of girls, including her best friend, but there is no doubt that she has suffered at the hands of her famous father.
I am intensely interested in psychotherapy. Finding ways of expressing and understanding my emotive life. Now aged 50 it could be said that Bindi's life has been one long contradiction. Showing an interest in and talent for art was a way for her to bond with her father but it also meant that she would be forever in his shadow.
Her value as an artist and even as a person was measured only in relation to Harris. If there was interest in her work it was because people were curious to see what sort of art Rolf Harris's daughter could produce. Either way she could never dispel the view of some that the only reason she attracted any attention at all was because she was the daughter of Rolf Harris, the man who could create stunning pictures in five minutes using a painter and decorator's brush and a tin of emulsion.
Bindi could not win. As the only child of her parents' long marriage, Bindi should have enjoyed all her father's attention. Instead it was the world outside that basked in his cheery persona. At home Harris spoke little and would lock himself away in his studio, painting and reading for hours.
I have never witnessed him being interested on children [sic] in that way, EVER. In public he is more interested in getting groups of people singing or telling jokes than skulking off with one person, he is just nothing like the man the press have been portraying him to be. He has been swept up in a witch hunt because of his high profile and celebrity!
A total travesty at his age. But when he's at home he's very much switched off, very quiet, making something. When Nicholls moved to Bristol as an adult, she said she was quite frightened about him coming to visit. The revelation of the affair came in the late 90s, the court heard, when Nicholls was already struggling to deal with other personal issues. I have dealt with all sorts of things in therapy.
