Over on Weibo people in China have been in a frenzy of discussion — all because of something weird that happened in Italy. We do not know if the supermarket had a serious watermelon knocking issue, or if they just fancied making a little joke. Either way, a photo of the sign got posted on Weibo, where people took the sign personally.
For some reason, loads of people in China believed that the sign was directed at them, and that watermelon-knocking is a habit that only Chinese people know about. They responded by sharing photos and videos of themselves knocking on watermelons and pretending to wait for a reply. What does being diabetic have to do with liking watermelon? Honestly, watermelon and most fruit is not good for people with diabetes; it has a very high sugar content.
The sugar in fruit is not very different from cane sugar. If a doctor or dietitian told you that you could eat unlimited amounts of fruit, please try to get some updated information. I have Type 2. Take care! I was also taught that fruits are very high in sugars and to be very careful how much you eat with diabetes. According to LiveStrong, the glycemic load of watermelon is 5. Very low. I think the poster was alluding to the fact that, as a diabetic, she may not be able to have many sweets, but watermelon is a sweet treat she can let herself have, so she sure does enjoy some chilled watermelon!
Our sugar intake is now from Watermelon, and all other fruits. The hollow sounding watermelon has never let me down. A dull sound will mean an inferior tasting melon. I will now also look for the yellow spot.
Thanks for the info! If it is not quite ripe yet, put the cork back in and wait, checking on it every few days.. You should have a mighty ripe watermelon eventually! After looking for the yellow ground spot check the stem.
It should be dark. A light color stem means it was picked green and probably still it green. Pretty good advice, however, the thump test will give an indication if the watermelon is starting to separate in the middle.
Suzy A watermelon will continue to ripen after harvest if it was not picked too green. If you see a thick sturdy green stem but your melon meets all other guidlines the rind may be very thick. What has always worked for me is that watermelon should have a small very string yellow circle not creamy or light yellow on one end and opposite side of that circle should be drak green in contrast.
I have always found yummy melon. Besides what you have said i always look for brown scars, i have read they are formed because the thing is growing to fast and it is kind of a tare, and i have heard it is where insects bees have went after it for its sweetness. And Yes you dont want a mushy feel to any part of it. And if you know how to become one with the melon be the melon that will certainly help.
A man selling watermelons from a truck from Hermiston Oregon home of the best watermelon in the nation, they are famous for their melons said to look for tiny holes in a concentrated spot in the watermelon,,,that is where the bees have tried to get into the melons due to their sweetness aka ripeness …it has worked every time for me… and indicates not being picked too early and stored somewhere….
Good advice, but one correction. I flick end of my finger.. A high pitched sound means it is tight, not soft and ripe. Try it on anything.. The dull, thump thump sound means it is soft, more full of water.. All the words people use to define the sound are confusing. Snap some green and then overripe bananas and you will learn the difference quickly.
I am a fruitarian, mostly, and have been doing this for years. The cork method works but in a different way. If second is still bad you thank the guy and go to the next.
Should I just pick up several and see if one is heavier than the others? My back might not like that, giggle. How do I check if its ready it does sound hollow as one would hear when a loaf of bread is ready after baking Thank you for your answer and hope this will help others with this same issue, Mike T. Thank you for the information. If the watermelon is ripe, the field spot should be a large, yellow patch on one side of the melon.
If it is ripe, the color should be a creamy, almost butter-like yellow. The bigger the yellow belly and the creamier the color means the more time the melon spent ripening on the vine. However, if the spot is smaller or looks more white than yellow, then the melon may not be as ripe. Another way to find a ripe watermelon is to lightly knock the outside with your knuckles. A ripe melon will have a deeper sound, as opposed to an over-ripe one that will have a more hollow or flat sound.
A duller, more hollow sound can mean the flesh is starting to go soft and spoil.
